Another dreary day, but we headed off this afternoon to do a river valley walk in a nearby dale: Wharfedale.

We began at Hubberholme, which has a twelfth century church (very unusual in Yorkshire Dales) and an inn (built 1654, an inn since 1754) that has not been modernised/altered.

The church is St Michaels and All Angels - a lovely churchyard, and woodwork inside by the famous Yorkshire carver who makes mice on things (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Thompson_(designer)). Not gothic at all, squat and flat, with a very Dales-ish rectangular look!

I found five mice, this is one of them.

Then we walked up the Wharfe River...the usual wildflower meadows, stone fences and barns - but they are still beautiful!

Wildflowers...

The colouration of the water comes from peat....

The valley is full of stone bridges....

Clusters of buildings and stone fences....

Hawthorne...

Inevitably, more wildflowers...

Back at Hubberholme we went to the inn for dinner....

This is the inn from the outside...

And from the inside....(note dog, George).

Through to the dining room...

The dining room, featuring John's ale.
You could just imagine pulling up here in a horse drawn coach on a dark night...

They always have a candle lit because the inn was the manse before it was an inn, and the minister put a candle in the window when he was available. Behind the candle you can see the many pie awards the pub has won.

Sorry, a dinner picture, but here is one of the prize-winning pies. It was most excellent.

The river outside on the way back to the car: great walk and terrific pub.
